When you start training BJJ you may have some questions you'd like to ask before your first class. At Alliance BJJ Brisbane we are always more than happy to answer any questions you have, but here are some of the most commonly asked questions from new students:

No. You do not need to be super fit to begin your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training. The best way to get fitter is to train BJJ and there are members of all levels of fitness at Alliance BJJ Brisbane.

No. You do not need previous experience in other martial arts although if you have already trained in a different martial art that’s fine too.

You are never too old to start training BJJ. Train to your own limits and push yourself as hard you want to.

Size is unimportant in BJJ as you learn and perfect techniques to submit your opponent rather than using size or strength.

You do not need to be super strong to start training BJJ, although you’ll find your strength improves through regular training. Submissions are based on technique not strength so it is not essential.

On your first lesson bring some basic fitness clothing eg shorts and t- shirt and we can provide a gi for you to wear for your free trial. A water bottle is also a good idea.

You do not need protective equipment although a lot of students choose to wear a mouth guard when rolling.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is an excellent form of self-defense and is a core area of training. We pay particular focus to self-defense in our women’s only class.

You can train as little or as often as you want to or however many classes fit into your lifestyle. We have membership options that cover everyone.

On average when participating in regular training a blue belt takes 1-2 years to achieve.

A black belt can take 10+ years of training and lots of hard work to achieve.

Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is commonly known as the gentle art and is not scary to participate in. We take care of each other at Alliance BJJ Brisbane and are proud of the friendly atmosphere at the club.

We have Gi’s you can buy here at Alliance BJJ Brisbane. There are also many online stores where you can buy a gi. Feel free to ask Bruno or other members at the club if you need further advice.

Not super fit? No need to worry. We have many different members at the club all at different levels of fitness and experience and you can work at your own pace at your own time. If you continue Jiu-jitsu your fitness will definitely improve but it’s not necessary to be in amazing shape before you start.

We are really proud of the super friendly, welcoming environment that we have at Alliance BJJ Brisbane. New students are always welcomed and made to feel included from the very beginning. The people are friendly, egos are small and we love meeting new students.

Don’t worry if you don’t have super strength or are shorter in stature. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is not based on physical strength and size it’s about learning and perfecting techniques to gain advantage over your opponent.
